Our Creative Director LOVES her linen sheets. She loves them so much she gives all her family and friends pure linen sheet sets for gifts. Confused about linen, what exactly is linen and why should you be sleeping in it? The word ‘linen’ can be a generic term that covers all types of household linens, however it is not a description of the many fabrics from which those items can be made.
Linen the fabric is well known in Australia as a clothing item, soft white linen shirts being perfectly suited to our hot and oft times humid climate. Less common in Australia is bedlinen fabricated from that same soft white pure linen. Commonly found in linen cupboards across Europe, made famous in Ireland (Irish linen) but not so frequently found in Australia where our easy care lifestyle prevails. Until recently, that is. Linen sheets are the best thing to be sleeping between.
When we first began offering our customers linen at Lucienne Linen we mixed in with cotton, allowing customers a jump start on the softening process that linen undergoes when it is laundered. Australians, if nothing else, are well travelled. Increasingly our customers were returning from foraging trips in the US and Europe with linen for bed and table, and wanted more, the right size, and custom made items.
Once the love begins it has no end. Pure linen is the gift that keeps on giving. It loves to be washed, improves with age (gotta love that) and has heat regulating properties – linen is warm in winter and cool in summer, the perfect temperament for a good night’s sleep.
A gift from nature, Linum Usitatissimum (translated as ‘most useful linen’)known commonly as flax is the source of this most wonderful textile with properties that include anti-bacterial, non-allergenic, durability, strength and yet a soft handle. One of very few crops still grown across western Europe, our linen is made from French flax to our exacting specifications.
